Hi from Millay and Long-Overdue Recording
Hi everyone.
First off, apologies for not updating promptly with the recording for the last of our workshop series on Process, this one with Tom Grattan on drafting and revising. The past month has been super-hectic with travel and teaching. Thanks for your patience.
November is my month to take a breath and focus on writing since I’m lucky enough to be at Millay Arts for residency. Currently sitting at one of the common workrooms with a view:
My studio is at the barn across the lawn, which I might show you near the end of my stay. There’s Internet there but I’m choosing to only do Internet when I’m in the main building. I find that separation between Internet and no-Internet areas really helps me get my work done and also lead a happier life.
In writing news, I just found out that my story, “Crosscurrents,” in the fall issue of BLR, has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize! As much as I try not to focus on external success, I can’t help but feel hugely grateful to be appreciated especially for my fiction. After so many years working in nonfiction genres (journalism, criticism, essay, and memoir), it has felt like such a huge leap to shift to fiction and it has taken me several years to gain my footing, which still feels tenuous but getting more sure every day. So if you’re at a stage in your writing journey where you’re treading into unfamiliar territory without a clear map, please know that you’re not alone!
